Resumen:

Surfaces normal to the (100) and (001) directions of purchased rutile single crystals were implanted with 7 MeV C2+ ions, using the Instituto de Física 3 MV Pelletron accelerator, with fluences between 1014 and 1015 cm-2. The planar waveguides generated were measured using the coupled prism method, using a Metricon 2010/M coupler, at a wavelength of 632.8 nm, with a high refractive index GaP prism. In the (001) direction, which corresponds to the crystal optical axis, waveguides were observed for the ordinary index. In the (100) direction waveguides were observed for both the ordinary and extraordinary indices. The value of the extraordinary index is a continuous function of the orientation of the sample with respect to the incoming light beam, and this was observed in the waveguides as well. The absorption curves for control samples show a fundamental absorption edge at 3.03 eV for both orientations, which changes slightly in the implanted samples. The fluorescence curves present an emission band near the blue-green region with intensities depending on sample orientation, for both control and implanted samples.
