Resumen:

Polymeric nanocomposites are a class of relatively new materials with ample potential applications. This chapter first covers fundamental and applied research on polyester/clay nanocomposites, which includes polyethylene terephthalate (PET), blends of PET and poly ethylene 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxy-late (PEN), and unsaturated polyester resins. The second section deals with polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP)-montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites, including blends of low density polyethylene (LDPE), linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), and high density polyethylene (HDPE). The next section analyzes the fireretardant properties of nanocomposites made of high impact polystyrene (HIPS), layered clays, and nonhalogenated additives. The fourth section discusses the conductive properties of blends of poly methyl methacrylate (PET/PMMA) and PET/HDPE combined with several types of carbon black (CB). The synthesis and potential applications of barium sulfate particles with various morphologies are discussed in the fifth section. The final section briefly exposes the new nanocomposites of graphene. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
