Resumen:

Intestinal protozoa include species that can live in the lumen of the intestine and others that gain access to the bloodstream and eventually disseminate to other organs, particularly the liver. In this chapter we concentrate on the three most common protozoa that affect the liver or biliary ducts: Entamoebahistolytica, Criptosporidiumparvum, and Giardia lamblia. Each has a different life cycle. Hepatic involvement is a frequent clinical presentation for ameba infection, whereas Cryptosporidium and Giardia are uncommon etiological agents of hepatobiliary damage, and affect mainly selected populations such as immunocompromized individuals. © 2012 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.
