Resumen:

This chapter discusses the state of the art of smart polymers with potential biomedical applications and focuses on the interest of ionizing radiation, compared to conventional methods, for controlling polymerization during hydrogel formation and for grafting of polymers onto biocompatible substrates. Gamma radiation has been shown particularly useful for functionalizing surfaces with pH-and/or temperature-responsive polymers, in order to tailor the hydrophilicity and the capability to adsorb therapeutic substances and to control the release rate. Methods involving one or two steps and pre-irradiation or direct irradiation have been developed. The absorbed dose, monomer concentration, reaction time and temperature determine the degree of grafting and the structure of the grafted polymer. Examples of smart hydrogels, grafted polymers, grafted hydrogels and grafted IPNs are given and their potential in the biomedical field is outlined.2010 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
