Resumen:

Air pollution is the consequence of natural or anthropological events that liberate a variety of elements to the atmosphere. These pollutants enter to the respiratory system as gases or adhered to carbon core particles. These particles reach the respiratory epithelium, inducing a wide assortment of chemicals. Particles are a health concern because metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, bacteria, fungi are carried on the surface. One of the mechanisms that pollutants, especially particulate matter, exert when in contact with the epithelium surface, is oxidative stress by generating free radicals and reactive species. The epithelial cells switch on a variety of mechanisms to protect the tissue structure and function. Antioxidative defenses are activated helping the epithelium to maintain its integrity. A description of these mechanisms will be displayed in this chapter. © 2013 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. All rights reserved.
