Resumen:

Many species of vascular plants inhabiting the Mexican temperate forests are threatened by continuous environmental impact, mainly due to human activities. Some are recorded in some risk category in the Mexican official publication named 'Norma Oficial Mexicana 059' (NOM-059-ECOL-2001), in the IUCN red lists (the World Conservation Union) or in CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). Distribution maps of 31 threatened species of vascular plants were generated or updated with information obtained from institutional databases, herbarium specimens, field work, and specialized literature; with this information, we analyzed species richness, endemism and distributional patterns. Mexican territory was divided using a grid system based on a chart index (scale 1:50,000 composed system by grids of 15' x 20'). Factors that represent a threat for these species, to their current habitats and natural populations are discussed, and some strategies are proposed to prevent their extinction. Regarding conservation, we evaluated their geographic distribution based on current Mexican National Protected Areas (NPAs) and Mexican Priority Terrestrial Regions for Conservation (PTRs). We also suggest the urgent incorporation of some of these species in the recent IUCN Red Data List of Threatened Species (2009) and in the NOM-059. Most of the grid-cells with high diversity and endemism are located in eastern Mexico, and are especially associated with mountain landscapes. Among the factors that represent a threat, we concluded that the main problem for all species is habitat destruction, due to increase in agricultural areas, forest exploitation, and animal husbandry, followed by expansion of human settlements, illicit extraction, and traffic of plants. Most of the species studied require special policies for their conservation due to problems that affect their natural populations. Conservation strategies include: (1) demographic and ecological studies of these species; (2) collection of seeds and vegetative propagation for ex situ conservation in botanical gardens; (3) targeting of specific areas where these species inhabit, in order to include them in future conservation plans. With few exceptions, these species are underrepresented in the current Mexican System of Natural Protected Area
