Resumen:

The relevance of biogeographical evolutionary analyses for conservation science is discussed and highlighted. The general methods that can be applied to prioritize areas for protection at regional global scales are briefly commented and exemplified with Mexico as a case study. We conclude that a biogeographical atlas, representing a synthesis of distributional patterns of taxa from a country or area, may help determine priorities for the selection of areas for conservation. © 2010 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
