Resumen:

Permanent magnets have the ability to present a static magnetic field (SMF) withoutany additional external source of energy, and its density magnetic flux may be uniform, non uniform, static or varying on time (dynamics). For all these characteristics, permanent magnets have been used in numerous applications on the industry and theclinic, such: magnetic resonance imaging, sensors, analog meters (galvanometers),motors, actuators, loudspeakers, microphones, earphones, electric generators, microwaves generators (magnetron), mineral separation and many others. On the other hand, the interaction between SMF and living organisms is slightlywell-known, but this research field is rapidly growing. Nowadays, there are only somestudies about effects of SMF at entire living organism or cellular level, in comparison tothose studies using extremely low frequency magnetic field. This chapter is focused on morphological modifications that magnetic fields mayproduce related to cell shape, cell surface, cytoskeleton, protein and gene expression; inaddition, migration, differentiation, and orientation of primary cell cultures will be alsodiscussed. All of them exposed to dynamic magnetic field (magnetic field varying ontime) or SMF, produced by permanent magnets. Inside these phenomena, we describedour experiences around magnetic fields using magnets and its effects in culture ofchromaffin cells.Much more studies are still needed to understand action mechanisms of magneticfields on living organisms. However, the increasing amount of data reported on thebioeffects of SMF is leading researchers to propose future therapeutical use toregeneration and migration of nerve, like a new application of magnets. © 2012 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
