Resumen:

Free radicals are normally generated in many metabolic pathways. These radicals may interact with different cellular components and induce cell injury. However, there is an efficient antioxidant system like Glutathione (GSH) that protects the organism against free radical-induced cell injury. Oxidative stress results when there is a serious imbalance between generation of free radicals and antioxidant capacity, or disturbance in glutathione homeostasis in the body. When free radicals exceed antioxidant capacity, an induction of cell injury takes place which leads to diverse physiologic and pathologic changes, including clinical diseases. This chapter reviews the possible mechanisms of GSH that are involved in usual clinical disorders and their studies in animal models. Moreover, a description of the analytical techniques and biochemical markers used to monitor GSH and oxidative stress in the same disorders is made in this recompilation. © 2013 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
