Resumen:

The present chapter offers a review of the literature that describes the complex factors related to adherence to treatment in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients. This review starts with a definition of CKD followed by a description of this disease's epidemiology. It also includes a historical examination of the treatments that these patients have received, as well as the current treatment methods available. The central core of this chapter involves assessment of adherence to CKD treatments and the psychological variables that have shown to be associated with adherence behaviors. At the end of the chapter, we will be describing evidence-based programs to improve adherence, and the authors will share a series of conclusions and suggestions with the audience interested in doing research in this challenging field. © 2012 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
