Resumen:

The chapter discusses the applications of metalloenzymes for fine chemical synthesis. Enzymes containing iron, copper, cobalt, zinc, and other metals and their relevant catalyzed reactions are introduced. The chapter briefly describes the mechanistic aspects of the catalysis and focuses mainly on the advantages and bottlenecks in terms of conversion, selectivity, reaction rates, and biocatalyst stability. The chapter also addresses strategies to improve the biocatalyst performance, such as immobilization and chemical or genetic modification. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
