Resumen:

This chapter first describes the formation, properties, and composition of oral biofilms that can cause periodontal diseases and also serious problems on metallic devices such as dental implants. It includes a description of studies regarding some factors that can influence biofilm formation on a biomaterial surface, such as chemical composition, surface energy, hydrophilicity, and topography. Finally, the chapter points out the importance of understanding the mechanisms of biofilm formation on different biomaterial surfaces, in order to control and prevent the formation of these structures and ensure the long-term successful life of biomedical devices such as dental implants. © 2013 Woodhead Publishing Limited All rights reserved.
