Resumen:

Presidentialism as a form of government was born as an alternative to both monarchy (absolute or constitutional) and parliamentarism (republican or monarchical). This article discusses the history and evolution of presidentialism; debates as to whether, and to what extent, both institutional designs - presidentialism and democracy - are compatible with each other; and trends in a number of presidential systems from the 1990s onwards. © The several contributors, 2012.
