Resumen:

Copper slag (CS) was evaluated as an efficient and economical photocatalyst in heterogeneous solar photo Fenton-like reactions for inactivating pathogenic parasites in water. Characterization of the CS indicated that fayalite (Fe2SiO4) was the main iron phase (~90%) present in this material and that the measured CS band gap was better than the value reported for titania. The CS/H2O2/artificial solar light system had an Ascaris suum eggs inactivation efficiency of 58% and an {dot operator}OH radical production of 23µmol/l, which is better than values reported for other iron-rich minerals. These results suggest that CS may potentially be used as an efficient and low-cost photocatalyst for water disinfection. The influence of pH, slag dose, and the intensity of artificial solar light were also analyzed in this work. © 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
