Resumen:

The practice of forensic sciences in Mexico dates from prehispanic times (14th and 15th centuries) to the colonial (16th to 19th centuries) and until present times. Of course, originally that practice was empirical and progressively, in pace with the global evolution of science, appeared the corresponding applications to the forensic cases. It is appropriate to talk of a scientific approach from the 19th century onwards. Particularly in the area of forensic medicine, outstanding professionals promoted a better practice, wrote books and papers, and suggested new related laws and the construction of adequate installations. During the past century the emphasis was on the professionalization of those who chose to work in the forensic sciences world. Also, the number and quality of the forensic laboratories, morgues and offices increased considerably. Today, lawyers, scientists, technicians and even the general public acknowledge the influential role of the forensic sciences in favour of the justice, the security and the wellbeing for the Mexican society. © 2015 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
