Resumen:

Post-operative mediastinitis is one of the most feared complications when performing a cardiac surgery through a sternotomy, compared to other types of surgery, this one exposes the most the cardiac tissue to the thoracic surface, with increased risk for infection in diabetic, obese or patients with chronic renal insufficiency, among others; as any post- operative infection, the causative agents are usually from normal skin flora such as Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, therefore, preventive measures before, during and after surgery are discussed in extent to achieve adequate results and decrease the possibilities of allowing microbial growth within the incision, sometimes limited to superficial planes, but in other instances these can advance to more deep layers. © 2015 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
