Resumen:

Parkinson?s disease (PD) is a progressive, neurodegenerative disorder of the central nervous system. The primary symptoms of PD result from greatly reduced activity of dopamine-secreting cells due to cell death in the pars compacta region of the substantia nigra. The loss of dopamine as a result of death of dopamine neurons accounts for most of the movementrelated symptoms of the disease. There is no cure for Parkinson?s disease, but medications can provide relief from the symptoms. Since dopamine cannot cross the hemathoencephalic barrier, the drug delivery to the brain remains a big challenge. In this chapter we will discuss a novel way of dopamine release in situ from inorganic nanostructured reservoirs that may be potentially used in PD treatment. © 2013 by World Scientific Publishing Co.
