Resumen:
This chapter discusses the synthesis and functionalization of polymeric
matrices with smart or stimuli-sensitive polymers by gamma-rays. These
smart components were reviewed from their preparation, properties and
potential applications. The performance of these materials as drug
delivery systems provide specific characteristics for the design of
novel polymers with enormous chances in biotechnology applications.
Specifically, the use of gamma radiation for the synthesis of graft
copolymers and modification of hydrogels using pH and thermo sensitive
monomers, are discussed in this chapter. The effects of the absorbed
dose, monomer concentration and reaction time on the amount of graft,
are also mentioned. Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) and
poly(acrylic acid) (PAAc) are some of the most popular stimuli-sensitive
polymers that have been grafted onto different polymeric matrices.
PNIPAAm is thermo-sensitive material which undergoes a phase transition
(LCST) of about 32 degrees C, in aqueous media. On the other hand, PAAc
is pH sensitive polymer which has a capability to undergo further
chemical reaction to produce new functional groups. As an example, a
combination of these products can play an important role as medical
device or delivery systems for the local release of drugs for curative
or prophylactic purposes. Currently, intense research is being carried
out to design medical devices with improved features regarding
biocompatibility and therapeutic performance.
