Resumen:

In 1976 the Manufacturing and Design Center (CDM) was founded by Professor Alberto Camacho-Sanchez (1921 - 1995) His aim was to link the School of Engineering of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) with Mexican industries to develop tailored ready-to-use machines. A second aim was to develop well trained students with experience in real industrial projects. Since then the CDM has evolved. Many of their members started as young engineers. Nowadays many of them have obtained master and doctorate degrees. This evolution has generated areas of basic and applied research. These research areas are in line with the view of the founder of forming students with practical experience in design During these thirty years, many enterprises have sought help in the CDM for the development of ready-to-use machines. This has created a number of issues between the university and the industry. Enterprises always seek for quick cheap solutions, and on the other hand, the university has the main task of developing knowledge, concepts and innovative ideas. This article introduces some ideas to allow the CDM to provide industry with the kind of solutions that they need, keeping the basic idea that the University develops concepts, ideas and knowledge, not commercial products. One of these ideas is to involve a "linking enterprise" in the process to develop a product. This linking enterprise would take the knowledge or concepts developed by the CDM and make the advanced research and take that concept into a commercial product and deliver it to the sponsor enterprise. These ideas, although not new in universities of other countries, have not been completely understood and applied in Mexico and need to be adapted to the characteristics of emerging economies. To achieve good solutions it is necessary to change the way many sectors of the industrial and academic society view the industry-academic collaboration. Copyright © 2006 by ASME.
