Resumen:

The shear strength of confined masonry walls is estimated with a new set of expressions. Unlike other procedures, the masonry strength, including the contribution of the axial force is dependent on the amount of transverse reinforcement. This fact has been observed in recent and previous experimental investigations in Mexico in which the strains of horizontal reinforcement were properly measured. Those measures were used to estimate the contribution of horizontal reinforcement and the difference to the wall´s total strength is attributed to the mentioned masonry strength. An important feature of the proposed methodology is the definition of a threshold amount of reinforcement from which no additional strength can be gained by increasing the amount of steel. Minimum and maximum amounts of horizontal reinforcement are proposed. The new formula was calibrated with available results from full scaled tests developed in Mexico. © 2016 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
