Resumen:

The elder population suffers higher number of diseases than younger population. Therefore, the consumption of drugs is higher in this population than in the rest of the populations. A recent study made in USA shows that proximately 77% of individuals older than 65 years old consume at least one drug. Even though that these people represent 12% of total population, their rate of drug consumption corresponds to 30% of all the drugs used in that country. Other reports indicate that this population consume between 1.5 and 4.2 drugs at the same time. This represents a big financial cost and apart from this, the inherent risks of polypharmacy related with factors of aging increase and this might lead to possible apparition of adverse effects, which can be severe for health. In the present study, we describe the pattern of drug consumption based on previous reports made in elderly Mexican population in comparison with investigations made in other countries. In this regard, it was found that drugs that are mostly consumed are those used in cardiovascular and in central nervous system problems as well as antiinflammatory and analgesic drugs. However, the conclusion in both studies points to the necessity of implementing public health politics directed to improving the use of medicaments in the elderly population based on a correct prescription, compliance evaluation and avoidance of simultaneous use of multidrug. The implementation of this kind of politics would significantly help to improve the health of the elderly people and eliminate the risk of bad or incorrect use of drugs. © 2016 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
