Resumen:

During the last two decades, an unexplained and highly lethal epidemic of chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology has appeared or made itself evident in the Pacific Coastal lowlands of the Mesoamerican Region, particular in El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and possibly some areas of Southeastern Mexico. This epidemic has presented a systematic pattern of growth in incidence and prevalence, conditioning a fivefold increase along the last 15 years, yet some believe that it has been present for many more decades and that this upsurge is in part due to increased awareness due to better case search, increased general life expectancy, and growing social and political concern. © 2017 Elsevier Inc.
