Resumen:

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is one of the most frequent neurological disorders in large parts of the world; the clinical picture is protean and related to number and topography of lesions. In endemic areas NCC is the principal cause of late-onset epilepsy and hydrocephalus in adults. Diagnosis depends on neuroimaging studies; predictive value of immunodiagnostic tests in serum is low. Treatment schemes should be individually designed according to the characteristics of the disease; it may combine cysticidals, steroids, surgery, and symptomatic drugs (e.g., antiepileptics). Eradication of cysticercosis has been possible in large areas through sanitary improvement and public education. © 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
