Resumen:

Pharmacovigilance (PV) comprises of a series of actions aimed at detecting and registering of Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs), while pharmacoepidemiology (PE) addresses issues pertaining to all the activities, which involve the detection of drug prescription patterns. We describe the procedures of PV and PE of drugs used in a pediatric hospital. The PV activities show that there is a relation between an increase in the incidence of ADRs and the prescription of a larger number of drugs. The PE activities reveal that antibiotics are the most frequently prescribed drugs followed by drugs used for gastrointestinal diseases. Since PV and PE activities were initiated, they have contributed to an adequate use of drugs in children. When the PE of a hospital is known, drug consumption can be optimally planned. PV and PE demonstrate that when polytherapy is not necessary, it must be avoided. Finally, the present guide can be adopted to initiate PV and PE at any hospital. © 2018 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. All rights reserved.
