Resumen:

For this study 853 water-bottle samples were collected from 150 sites during seven surveys carried out from November 2005 to July 2010. Samples were fixed in acidified Lugol's iodine solution and cell concentrations were counted with an inverted light microscope. Results revealed the presence of 65 species of which Achradina pulchra, Asterodinium gracile, Brachydinium capitatum, Ceratoperidinium yeye, Craspedotella pileolus, Dicroerisma psilonereiella, Erythropsidinium agile, Karenia asteriochroma, K bicuneifortnis, Pronoctiluca rostrata, Scaphodinium mirabile, Warnowia juno, W. maxima and W. rosea were new records for the southern Gulf of Mexico. Most of these species are illustrated. Gyrodinium fusiforme and Karenia brevis were the most abundant species with the highest records of 44.9 million and 5.4 million cells/L, respectively. Species distribution is briefly discussed in relation to published literature.
