Resumen:

In this paper we review the factors that produce damage in architectural monuments and ponder on how they should be assessed in order to put forth solutions that are not only technically acceptable but that are also satisfactory from the view point of conservationists, archaeologists, historians and even politicians. Intervention techniques must consider the extent and nature of damage in the monument from which a range of technically feasible solutions can emerge. Certain solutions may be rendered as temporary or as permanent, depending on circumstances which may not be solely technical. We discuss interventions that are intended to correct or mitigate the effects of the damaging agents. We also review actions that aim at preventing the accumulation of further damage. In this paper we also look at some solutions that are less commonly used and in which soil properties or stress states are modified conveniently to achieve the proposed goals.
