Resumen:

We present a geometric approach based on the deformed volume-conserving liquid drop model to make a quantitative study of the shape of nuclei. Using up-to-date experimental data for electric quadrupole moments and B(E2) transition probabilities, it is shown that for well-deformed nuclei, the prolate-oblate difference in binding energy due to the Coulomb and surface terms reaches values of the order of 500-800 keV, which is a considerable contribution driving the nuclei towards the prolate shape.
