Resumen:

Samples along depth profiles were taken from an old tailings deposit at an historical Mexican mining zone. Determination of total and soluble TMM (Cd, Pb, Zn, Fe, As, Cu, Ni) contents, mineralogy, pH, conductivity and acid base accounting allowed estimating the geochemical processes influencing metal?s mobility. Besides, geochemical modeling was applied to determine speciation and saturation indexes of minerals. Concentration trends with depth were not observed but the lowest pH layers contained the highest soluble TMM concentrations. Presence of calcite influences speciation and decreases the mobility of TMM. Retention of TMM within tailings occurs through the formation of low solubility metal carbonates and the elevation of pH promoting iron hydroxides precipitation that may retain As and metals. Total and soluble concentrations and toxicity indicate that As represents the highest environmental risk among the studied TMM. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
