Resumen:

We describe an experiment to access the onset of cracks in brick structural elements by means of arrays of the optical fibers attached to the surface of the elements. The opening of a crack leads to the fracture of the optical fiber that crosses the crack, thus witnessing its appearance. The detection of cracks of a width of about 1 mm was successfully conducted with the communications-grade multimode silica optical fibers. The optical transmission of all optical fibers of the array was continuously monitored by means of the multichannel optical transmitter and receiver. Our results demonstrate that the optical fibers served as reliable indicators of structural damage in form of cracks to brick masonry. We consider some practical aspects of implementing this method for monitoring the appearance of cracks in brick masonry buildings, which present structural risks. © 2018 IEEE.
