Resumen:

Magnetic actuation provides a low-cost and less complex method for droplet manipulation for digital microfluidic (DMF) platform. Magnetic actuation of droplets involves the use of superparamagnetic particles (SPPMs) on a low friction surface. Here, we present a DMF-compatible droplet bioactuation approach using magnetotactic bacteria (MTB). We employ Magnetospirillum magnetotacticum, a gram-negative type, which swims in a preferential direction in response to magnetic stimuli. Using an automated X-Y stage in combination with an array of magnets mounted on a 3D-printed holder, we demonstrate that MTB can exert a thrust strong enough to actuate droplets with volumes between 1 and 10 µL.
