Resumen:

This chapter considers the hydrogen production through thermochemical solar processes, focusing on two-step thermochemical cycles. It starts by introducing some of the main concepts in thermochemical solar hydrogen production, followed by a description of leading thermodynamic aspects. It then explains the water thermolysis process describing some process materials and the main techniques for separating H2 and O2. The following section deals with thermochemical cycles, where two-step thermochemical cycles are described and a review of the recent advances in the synthesis and kinetic analysis of redox pairs, such as ZnO/Zn, Fe3O4/FeO, ferrites of the type AxFe3-xO4, CeO2/CeO2-d, and on perovskites materials are presented. A specific section is devoted to the description of solar reactors from energy integration to efficiency issues. Another section focuses on the design, control strategies, and implementation of these cycles in concentrating solar power systems. Finally, thermochemical cycles energy and economic analysis are presented. © 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
