Resumen:

Cells are capable of adopting peculiar shapes suitable to their specific functions in multicellular organisms, or in their natural habitats if they are free-living individuals, as well as of keeping internal structures in proper positions throughout their lives. On the other hand, most cells need to undergo major spatial rearrangement when giving rise to daughter cells at the time of reproduction, and many of them can move appendages to either sweep external fluids over their surfaces or swim and crawl across their environments. Moreover, cells maintain a multidirectional traffic of molecules and small organelles throughout their bodies. All these different activities are possible by means of a complex intracellular framework of various filamentous structures, in combination with a number of anchoring, bundling, cross-linking, motoring, regulatory and other specialized proteins that together constitute a highly dynamic cytoskeleton. The present article overviews the evolution of the main proteins composing this cytoskeleton in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, how they are assembled into single filaments and these into major structural arrays, as well as the chief types of movement they support through interaction with molecular motors. Brief mention is finally made of some representative examples of pathological conditions related to the cytoskeleton and its multiple components. © 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
