Resumen:

This paper focuses on natural and cultural heritage loss in small rural communities in Central Mexico in order to find practical ways of improving living conditions through design, related to environment care, heritage preservation, and community identity. Due to rural urbanization in the vicinity of metropolitan areas and emigration to the United States, heritage values are significantly diminished in these areas, having an impact on community identity. Finding a link between regional ecosystems (native plants) and vernacular architecture could make people conscious about their natural and cultural heritage and how this relates to their sense of community identity. In this article traditional dwellings and the surrounding indigenous vegetation in a Hidalgo State community are being analyzed with a view to the selection of potential native species to be used in an open landscape design. This selection and its design potential are identified as an important link to prevent heritage loss and to provide a sense of regional identity to rural communities. Moreover, it is important to integrate heritage values into the architectural design process which also should consider community participation.
