Resumen:

Thousands of churches were built during the colonial era in Mexico that nowadays are in good rather conditions. They vary in size and architectural sophistication but some of them follow similar characteristics. Some churches were built in stages along the time. In general, at the beginning of the colonial period, the facades were only a plane wall without bell towers. Later, the bell towers were constructed by attaching the basement of the towers to the main wall of the facade. In this context, in recent years the study of the seismic behaviour of facades has become an important issue in Mexico, because is one of the most damaged elements due to seismic forces. This paper presents the comparison of the seismic behaviour of facades of Mexican colonial churches with and without bell towers in order to understand better the role of them in the seismic behaviour of the facades.
