Resumen:

The aim of this chapter is to summarize the importance of hydrogen as an alternative energy source and its principal applications and future trends in a new economy. The effect of the phenomenon of hydrogen embrittlement in metallic materials is mainly described and the principal factors that enhance the susceptibility of materials are discussed. The most common degradation mechanisms are explained for a good understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of the use of hydrogen as an energy of the future and for a better selection of materials operated in hydrogen environments. © 2020 Elsevier Inc.
