Resumen:

Dendrimers are a selected class of macromolecules including structurally hyperbranched nanopolymers with globular shapes. Specific properties such as nanometric size, low polydispersity index, transport capacity of molecules, total control in their preparation, good solubility, and in some cases high biocompatibility make them attractive materials for various applications. For several years, dendrimers have been proposed as drug delivery systems as their chemical characteristics such as versatile terminal groups allow them to conjugate with multiple drugs either covalently or by supramolecular interactions; with an adequate targeting agent they can enhance the efficacy of classical treatments. In the present chapter, we describe the different properties of dendrimers highlighting the characteristics that are helpful in nanotechnology applied to the design of drug delivery systems. © 2021 Elsevier Inc.
