Resumen:

On October and November, 2007, extraordinary precipitation events occurred in the Grijalva watershed, Mexico. Such events produced in turn flooding of about 80% of the Tabasco State territory, with water depths of about 4 m in some sites. Nearly 1.2 million people were affected and severe material and economic damages were produced. No human losses were recorded. These events also produced a landslide at the right margin of the Grijalva River in the river stretch between the Peñitas and the Malpaso dams-part of the Grijalva Hydroelectric complex-, which caused an obstruction in the river and a wave around 50 m in height. This wave devastated the San Juan del Grijalva town, causing 20 human deaths. This landslide is among the most important occurred in Mexico. Two concurring types of phenomena caused the landslide: one of a geological-geotechnical character and the other, of a meteorological character. Both contributed to the intensity and damages caused. The failure mechanism is described. As a consequence, the Mexican Federal Electricity Commission suspended power generation in the hydroelectric system and built a relief channel in a record time. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
