Resumen:

A seismic damage index is proposed in this paper for the analysis of RC buildings. This index uses the hysteretic energy dissipated by a structure during its inelastic response and a drift ratio related to an ultimate damage level in the structure. The index was calibrated with observed damage in laboratory tests of 77 RC column units that were subjected to different types of cyclic lateral displacements. The calibration was performed not only at an ultimate level of damage but also with levels of damage previous to the ultimate level. Values for this index calculated in this calibration had acceptable agreement with the levels of damage observed in the analyzed test specimens.
