Resumen:

Alumina-based materials were manufactured by the sintering of an intensive ball milling powder mixture of Al2O3 with 10% vol. of Co or Ni respectively. Sintered bodies were then exposed in air at 1000°C during several days in order to oxidize metallic particles close to the surface, for the formation of functionally graded materials. SEM analysis of the microstructures obtained in both sintered and oxidized bodies were performed in order to know the effect of the oxidation in the corresponding reinforced metal in each composite. The growth of the oxidized zone in the Al2O 3/Co/CoO and Al2O3/Ni/NiO functionally materials follow a parabolic behavior, which means that mass transport in the oxidized zone was the rate-controlling mechanism of the process. On the other hand, the use of cobalt or nickel in the original composite enhanced significantly their fracture toughness.
