Resumen:

An electron-beam laser that operates at the temperature required to produce metal vapor pressure for CW ultraviolet operation is discussed. Continuous-wave laser oscillation in the 8404-angstrom line of AII ? by charge transfer excitation from ground-state He ions created by electron impact was readily achieved. The electron-beam current threshold for oscillation was 45 mA when a 7.3% transmissive output coupler was used, indicating that the small-signal gain at this current is on the order of 0.1 cm-1. The electron-beam current threshold for operation in the UV is estimated to be an order of magnitude higher. The variation of the laser output power of the 8404-angstrom Ag II line as a function of current is shown. The maximum laser output power was 0.14 W and was obtained at 825 mA of discharge current, using a nonoptimized optical cavity with 7.3% transmissivity constructed by 2-m radius-of-curvature mirrors.
