Resumen:

Infections are the main consequence of immune suppression, whether the immune suppression is through primary genetic defects or acquired through HIV infection or treatment of underlying conditions. The types of infection seen in monogenetic diseases have taught us about the specificity of host defenses, with this knowledge being expanded in recent years, as the number and use of monoclonal antibodies has greatly increased for treatment of autoimmunity and malignancies. In this chapter, we discuss the infection spectrum observed in primary immunodeficiencies; immunosuppressive medications, including monoclonal antibodies; solid organ transplantation; and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. In each case, we also discuss approaches to antimicrobial prophylaxis as well as some therapies. Improved diagnosis, prophylaxis, and management of infections are imperative, as the number of immunocompromised individuals has increased through improved immunosuppressive agents, transplant regimens, and improved survival through new antimicrobials. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd.
