Resumen:

MXene belongs to a newly emerged family of two-dimensional (2D) stacked layered materials consisting of early transition metal carbides and/or nitrides. The intriguing features of MXene such as metallic conductivity, biocompatibility, large surface area, hydrophilicity and 2D layered atomic structure with abundant highly active surface sites make it an encouraging material for sensing application. Since the last decade, various sensing technologies and associated devices based on MXenes and their composites have been developed. Therefore, this chapter presents the recent advancements in the development of MXenes and their composites in gas and volatile organic compound (VOCs) sensors as well as electrochemical sensors and biosensors applications. Firstly, gas sensing fundamentals, key parameters of a gas sensor and different types of gas sensing device configurations are briefly discussed. Secondly, the parameters influencing the gas sensing performance are described and the sensing mechanism in MXene-based materials is elaborated. This chapter further discusses MXene and their composites-based electrode material utilized for sensing of various VOCs gases as well as the sensitive detection of environmental pollutants, pharmaceutical drugs and foremost biomarkers such as cancer biomarkers, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and glucose etc. Finally, the limitations and future perspectives based on MXene materials in sensing applications are discussed. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.
