Resumen:

Pollution in the environment, caused by pollutants or contaminants in different ways, produce a negative effect in the environment such that they could eliminate renewable sources in nature. Thus, mediums such as air, water, and soil that are directly exposed to chemical processes, and the subsequent disposal of those compounds, are prone to become hazardous due to adverse effects. Despite the efforts of governments and nonprofit organizations, they are unable to control and prevent increasing pollution in the environment. Therefore, it is indispensable to choose a correct solvent according to the basis and parameters of green chemistry. Within this context, the ONU raised the sustainability of industrial and commercial processes through basic principles established in 1998, taking into account the solvent?s economic consideration. Additionally, green metrics were raised to compare methodologies to find the maximum process optimization and reduce unnecessary waste as much as possible. Likewise, studies and tests for the substitution of classic organic solvents with others of renewable origin are currently in a phase of enormous activity within the field of green chemistry. This chapter addresses the current basis and metrics of green solvent parameters, as well as the main strategies taken by some of the most important environmental law and regulation organizations. In addition, this chapter examines the parameters of chemical compounds for environmental remediation including the use of solvents and their properties. © 2021 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
