Resumen:

Microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) is a novel and emerging technology for the production of biohydrogen from different wastewater feeds. This chapter aims to provide information on various aspects of MEC technology ranging from the basics of the process to the scale-up experiences. A brief description on hydrogen as an energy carrier and the relevance of MEC technology for sustainable hydrogen production is first presented. It is followed by information on process thermodynamics and calculations of different process variables. Important technical aspects such as reactor designs, cathode materials, bioanode, and operational parameters are then discussed. Subsequently, the scale-up experiences and existing bottlenecks of this technology are briefly discussed. Finally, some future research perspectives to realize practical applications of MECs on a wider scale are presented. © 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
