Resumen:

One essential function of living beings is the breathing process, which is absolutely necessary for obtaining oxygen and exhaling CO2 through gas exchange and maintaining active metabolism in tissues. Respiratory diseases are frequent in populations worldwide, and medicinal plants can be used to successfully treat cases of common cold, cough, bronchitis, rhinitis and sinusitis or provide supportive treatment in more complicated cases. In countries where traditional medicine, including phytotherapy, is important, species such as Althaea officinalis L., Ephedra sinica Stapf, Thymus vulgaris L., Hedera helix L., Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench and E. angustifolia DC are sold over the counter or used locally, and their mechanisms of action and active metabolites are well known. Thus, in countries where people depend on plants to treat respiratory problems, ethnopharmacological research can identify new species or compounds to treat these problems. In this chapter a brief review of the main mechanisms of action and the phytochemical composition of the main species used to treat respiratory conditions is presented. © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
