Resumen:

The growing interest to determine the concentration of pharmaceutical residues in the marine environment, along with the study of the harmful effects they may cause to marine organisms, have led to the continuous development of accurate and sensitive analytical methodologies. Since 2008, around 20 academic studies have been published to identify and quantify drugs in marine biota. These works include the validation of several sampling techniques, sample preparation procedures, and instrumental analysis. However, these methods cannot be generally applied due to the particularities of each case study. The objective of this chapter is to offer a general view of the currently available methods to determine pharmaceutical compounds in marine biota. In addition, some strategies are proposed for the development of monitoring methods fitted to the purpose in the analysis of this kind of compound in such complex matrices. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd.
