Resumen:

The mechanical behavior of three different planes were studied, namely: XY, YZ, and XZ, about an XYZ coordinate system that was located in the femur head. Thermal transitions for bovine bone were identified through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Vibrational analysis was done using Raman spectroscopy which confirmed the presence of calcium carbonate and hydroxyapatite as inorganic components of the sponge as well as some organic materials, such as collagen and noncollagen proteins, which were entirely removed by a defatting and a deproteinization process. However, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) revealed that despite the cleaning process, some minerals were kept in the sample, like Na, Mg, K, among others. The morphology of the sponge was studied using scanning electronic microscopy which showed that the microarchitecture of sponge depends on orientation, while X-ray computed tomography exhibited a complex architecture of the trabecular bone in the three analyzed planes, and it also revealed a channel network with 70% porosity. X-ray diffraction showed that trabeculae are mainly formed by polycrystalline nanohydroxyapatite and calcium carbonate, and that the hydroxyapatite from the trabecular bone has a preferential orientation, parallel to the Z direction. Finally, the mechanical properties of trabecular bone are compared with synthetic systems. © 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
