Resumen:

With the dismantling of the post-revolutionary regime in the late twentieth century, Mexico became a more open society, with a market-oriented economy, a competitive political system, a vibrant civil society, and a more positive attitude toward sexual diversity, women?s rights, ethnic differences, and religious beliefs. Yet, beneath these changes, old problems lurk. Corruption is still pervasive, organized crime has become more violent, human rights violations remain systemic. And, for all its transformations, Mexico continues to be a very unequal country, with half of its population in poverty. The persistence of these and similar problems has undermined public confidence in liberal institutions and values, thus creating a fertile ground for populism. With little regard for laws, institutions, and science, the populist leadership has been concentrating political power in the hands of the president, establishing a large patronage network that distributes some social benefits in exchange for personal loyalty, and militarizing many areas of public life. The negative consequences of this political style have been painfully evident in the official approach to the COVID-19 emergency. But even with these problems, Mexico is going through one of the most dynamic and challenging epochs of its long and often convulsive history. © 2023 selection and editorial matter, Harvey F.
