Resumen:

This chapter presents the structural assessment and seismic behavior of Mexican colonial churches. During the past two decades, there is an increasing interest to study the seismic behavior of old masonry churches in Latin America. The architectural heritage has been seriously damaged by earthquake activity. The interest to preserve these kinds of structures has motivated the study of their dynamical behavior and seismic vulnerability. Seismic assessment of old masonry churches is not an easy task, mainly because the churches are large structures with complex geometries and built with materials with a highly nonlinear behavior. Thus the structural assessment should be based on a theoretical (numerical analysis) and an experimental base (in situ and experimental testing). © 2021 Elsevier Inc.
