Resumen:

The arrival of a large number of Spanish refugees to Veracruz aboard the Sinaia, Ipanema and Mexique in July 1939 provoked different reactions in Mexico. The longstanding Spanish community and a substantial number of peninsulares, newly arrived to American lands, were far from sympathetic to the Republican cause. The concept of spiritual empire as a sublimated form of the lost domain rested on several principles. These included the Catholic religion, the hierarchical society, the Spanish language and the respect for traditions. The Catholic religion was not only a principle without which Spain itself was inconceivable, but through evangelization, this Hispanidad ?provided meaning to the American peoples.? The hierarchical society, that is: the recognition of human beings who are ?superior? to others and, therefore, better able to exercise power, also characterized the conservative Hispanismo. Mexican public opinion was clearly divided at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. © 2021 selection and editorial matter, José C. Moya; individual chapters, the contributors.
